But first, a Tour De Fleece update!

Miss K is move a third of theway to her goal of spinning 28 oz of victorian pink cormo (pink and brown, somewhat antique in feel). Because she’s gotten so far so fast (Thank you Holiday Weekend), she’s also working on her Aeolian and even learned a new beading technique (thank you Jasmin and Gigi!).

Now, on to Moon – what can I say? You’ll just have to watch it and see what you think. Smartest Monkey and Miss K both agree it is worth a watch and should be watched for lovers of hard sci-fi – but they do not recommend purchasing the movie. Miss K thinks it’s a dark movie. Smartest Monkey’s descriptor was “heavy.”

Miss K has been noticing more and more of it around her as days go by – meaning that it’s finally working it’s way to becoming at least a little mainstream. This is fabulous – as it means that steampunk items for the home, kitchen, etc., will be easier to find and that places where your non-steampunk friends shop may also finally have something for you to play with.

Lastly, there is a review of a series I’ve just finished reading called by Tony Ballantyne – I accidentally skipped the second book – but I did read the 1st and 3rd books: Recursion and Divergence. Because I find it impossible to talk about these books without spoilers, there wasn’t much of a review as an overall appreciation for the author’s writing style.

Episode 59 is an interview with Dani and Eytan Kollin, authors The Unincorporated Man and The Unincorporated War, the first tw books in the Unincorporated Series. This pair of brothers and Miss K sat down at BayCon to talk about their series, the unique and irresistible future they created for their books, and just how one can live in an asteroid. Also, did you know they are up for an award against some big science fiction authors? Want to know which one? Listen to the episode.

Far from just writing, Dani and Eytan also produce www.neverendingpanel.com – where they have interviewed many people in the science fiction industry as well as done mini-panels on subjects such as the best death scene.

The sound quality is poor for some of the recording, but improves after the first 20 or so minutes. The podcast runs just over 45 minutes, longer than our usual podcasts, but I trust you won’t mind.

Miss Kalendar welcomes Redminx back to discuss their recent shawl triumph. Remember episode 8 about knitting shame? Well, both shawls are now finished and Miss K and Redminx are moving into (or back to) their next projects.

Following that is a discussion of the new BSG movie “The Plan.” While both liked it, neither felt it was worth a purchase – so you’ll be better off renting this one. Also, it does NOT explain everything from the cylon point of view – so don’t go in with that expectation. But it is a great sort of highlight reel for the first 2 or so seasons and is a great movie if you are looking for a bit of reminder and a refresher of the series – same look and feel, same actors, and some funny bits.

In Episode 28, Miss Kalendar makes a confession: The new job is keeping her so busy that she hasn’t had much time to knit or spin…..regardless, she has finally managed to ply the yarn for her Aeolian. She did receive some lovely roving from Jasmin of the knitmoregirls podcast – as well as a shawl pin that looks like a star trek communicator!!! Gigi brought her back some swag from Dr. Gemma’s fibre retreat. AND, Smartest Monkey made her a bobbin winder! Can a spinner’s life get any better?

There is a reminder that the contest to win a signed copy of Gail’s book – Soulless is over at the end of this week, with the winner being chose and announced on next week’s podcast.

Then there’s the sci-fi section……Miss K goes a little overboard talking about the Mirror Mirror episode of Original Trek and the two follow up episodes she’s seen in DS9. There’s a breif aside as to the ethics of interfering in another universe’s events – and the ever-present question of why “evil” versions of characters seem to have sexual perversions or crazy sex drives (and why are they sometimes bisexual, as if that is some sort of perversion as well?). Episode 26 is about a subgenre of steampunk called dieselpunk. However, first there is a story about Miss K’s old boss and his knitting hazing yet nice going away gift – there is a tale of two looms – one operated by Jasmin of the knitmore girls.

There is a fashion moment from Gail Carriger about the two-cardigan trend – see her blog for more info -(pssst! It’s on the sidebar)

Then there is a discussion (rant?) about Dieselpunk – a supposed sub-genre of steampunk. Miss K tries a little vainly to define both – fails, and then simply gives some definitions from wikipedia.

Episode 23, Monster Movie of the Week

In Episode 23, we hear all about Miss K’s love of stripey socks, her love of lace, and her new sweater project! There has been some spinning in hopes of one day doing the Aeolian from knittyspin, but it’s still a ways off.

There is a lovely fashion report from Gail Carriger – just don’t ask her about Michael Cors!

In the Sci-Fi portion, Miss K waxes poetic about the giant shark vs. mega octopus monster movie. Specifically, about Deborah Gibson and her acting chops. And why is it that every movie that features san fransico always seems to want to mess with the golden gate bridge? Miss K doesn’t like this idea as she only lives an hour away. And likes driving over that bridge (especially when it is nice and foggy!!)

Episode 22, Well, I guess that’s right

In Episode 22, Miss K speaks to her love of knitting socks, and her not-really-doing-the-52-pair-plunge tally of socks. She’s on pair 13 – just at or behind the challenge. She wants to make a sweater, but it being cagey about which one, except that she’s in love with the Tangled Yoke Cardigan and the Joan Crawford. She’s even purchased some yarn from Purlescence.

Gail Carriger gives a second report on Peru!

In sci-fi, Miss K goes off on one of her big annoyances, mean/jerky characters in her sci-fi – like Dr. Polaski and Ensign Ro. Miss K doesn’t like dealing with mean people on her sci-fi since she can do that on a daily basis in real life if she wants.

Episode 18, Bridging the Gap

Well hello! Episode 18 involves knitting, spinning, and sci-fi, as usual. First up, there is the knitting and spinning portion of the podcast. Mostly socks and spinning, as usual. No major goals accomplished, but Miss Kalendar is pleased to report that she’s using her first handspun to make some toe-up socks….which is strange since she’s only made one pair of toe ups before on size 0, and now she’s designing a pair on size 2s.

In the sci-fi moment, Miss Kalendar is joined by her friend Andrew where they bemoan the lack of sci-fi on American Television networks and praise the BBC for helping to fill the void. They also have a moment of love for It’sIt Ice Cream Sandwhiches. Miss K is partial to the coffee ones, but couldn’t get her hands on any. Andrew likes the Vanilla. There is also a discussion of Star Trek as the perfect society vs. us now and what we would have to do to get there. Miss K comes to the conclusion that the enemy is us.

Episode 16, Who Watches the Watchmen

I sincerely apologize that this episode is late – there was an FTP issue that I had to call in SmartestMonkey to fix for me. After literally hours of me struggling and him struggling, he finally fixed the issue. I only hope it remains fixed!

In Episode 16, Miss K dithers about the Tour De Fleece – you can check her knitting and spinning exploits on her knitting blog. She has finally finished the cabletini toe-up socks, by Wendy Johnson. You can go to the brassneedles group on ravelry to keep up with the knitalong. Lastly, Miss K shares that she had to start a Swallowtail Shawl – a second one.

In the science fiction portion, Miss K is joined by Smartest Monkey to discuss the merits and flaws of the recent film, The Watchmen. They watched the movie on Friday night with Jasmin of the Knitmoregirls, designer Chloe Sparkle, and their significant others. The conversation turns to the difference between sounding scary and sounding constipated and Miss K cracks herself up repeatedly over calling Dr. Manhattan “Physician Manhattan” and his big blue manties.

Episode 15, Deanna Troi is all Heart, Baby!

Episode 15 is all about the ‘Trek, baby. In Episode 15, Miss Kalendar expands…a lot… about her two spinning wheels. We learn that Miss K has a peasant constitution. We also learn that she takes forever to finish a sweater. Ah well, someday she’ll have a cardigan of her very own.

Miss Kalendar also describes a trip to LACIS, the lace and textile museum in Berkley. Hair Jewelry, can you believe it!

Lastly, Miss Kalendar goes into the subject of associating old ‘trek characters with new ‘trek characters and expounds upon theories brought up to her by her friend, Andrew. Piccard is the Super Ego. Enough said!

Episode 13, Far and Away-scape

Welcome to Episode 12!

Knitting: First, we get learn that Miss K shouldn’t knit tipsy. Then, a review of Noro silk garden sock yarn. Miss K thinks it’s charming, but was unhappy to find a knot that ruined the color-progression of her project. Also, it’s a bit like novice-thick-and-thin handspun, so possibly not ideal for socks. Lastly, it’s hard to be project-monagomous when you want to spin.

Sci-Fi: Miss K is joined by Foo, X Men afficionado, and they wax poetic (and a little explicit) about X Men, the movies, the comics, and Patric Stewart….Foo helps Miss K earn the explicit tag.

Episode 10 Time Travel (Going back in time)

Miss K also has a moment of snark about people wearing pajamas in public with platform flip flops.

Lastly, we brave the issues of time travel in science fiction (as opposed to time travel in reality tv?) and Miss K brings up some of her favorite time travel sci-fi moments – as well as gets off on quite a bizarre and somewhat pollyanna tangent about ethics and Dr. Seuss. And, although I couldn’t remember it at the time, the 80s tv show I was rambling about in the podcast is called “Out of This World.” And, damnit, she should have aged prematurely. Just sayin’

Since Chris has never before knit a sock, she picked the pattern, the Cabletini Toe-up Socks by Wendy D Johnson. Because this weekend was BayCon, the San Jose-based Sci-Fi convention (this year’s theme was Steampunk), there is are a few notes on this and the soon to be created Borg Beanie, which I am striving to write a pattern for this week. We shall see if ambition again lays me low.

Sadly, Gail Carriger is again missing from the podcast, and has lamented that her diligent searching hasn’t turned up anything podcast-worthy. Knitting has been conspicuously missing from the fashion pages. However, she assures me that she’ll have a report for us when she returns from the BEAs on Knitwear in New York.

Episode 6. The Star Trek Free Episode

There is no Star Trek in this episode because Miss K doesn’t like to give spoilers and wants everyone who is interested to have a chance to see the movie before she goes off the deep-end about it.

In Episode 6, Miss Kalendar gives an update on the puff-sleeve feminine cardigan and the frankensocks she’s been working on. There is also a quick teaser for an upcoming project with ChrisFixedKitty of the Adult Space Child-Free Podcast.

There is no fashion from Gail Carriger this week – she’s off at a lady’s garden party.

There is, however a quick discussion of upcoming Baycon, the San Jose-are Science Fiction convention, chock full of parties, panels, authors, and steam-punk. There are a few quick tips for how to steam-punk your normal clothes in a hurry. For more in-depth costuming as well as more information and resources for steam-punk as a whole, visit Gail’s steam-punk page.

The science fiction segment is a shout out to indie sci-fi writers and producers – those who are making sci-fi for the rest of us, often for free, and using their own time and money to do so. Celebrate non-mainstream media artisans!

Miss K sincerely appologizes that this episode is a day late – not that anyone probably noticed. She awoke to a broken power supply and then ended up spending all day (and momst of the night) Sunday with J. Daniel Saywer, Kitty, and Chris Lester, recording the feedback shows for the Metamor City Podcast and Predestination and Other Games of Chance. Give them a listen if you’ve got a minute, they are both great Sci-Fi stories.
